Why fit?

The Unplugged Performance Limited Slip Differential is a direct drop-in replacement for the stock Tesla Model 3 and Tesla Model Y open differentials.

The purpose of these LSD units is to improve the distribution of power between wheels without using the brakes and stability control software. This physical Limited Slip Differential helps put more power to the ground without slowing the vehicle unnecessarily in conditions where one or more wheels lose traction, such as high-g-force cornering, off-roading, and driving in inclement conditions like snow and ice.

Unplugged Performance’s helical-mechanical LSD functions seamlessly with the electronic traction control, whereas clutch-type LSDs cause binding as the clutch functions compete with the electronic stability systems.

The goal with the Unplugged Performance Limited Slip differential is to optimise the amount of power that gets to the wheels and to do so as quickly and efficiently as possible. Tesla uses a typical electronic traction control system on their cars which is designed to reduce power to the slipping drive wheel by applying brakes and cutting power. Unplugged Performance LSD will divert the power to the wheel with the most traction before the traction control system intervenes by applying braking on slipping tire. The result is quicker response and more range.

In off-road applications, under extreme wheel articulation it is common to experience wheel-lift. This lift causes that wheel to spin freely in the air until the electronic stability control kicks in and applies the brakes. This is a time-consuming process that is both less than desired when your Tesla is sitting on 2-3 wheels, but is also a waste of battery energy.

The LSD works to prevent that unwanted wheel spin effectively providing power to the drive wheels with the most traction quickly moving the Tesla through the obstacle while also preserving battery life.
